- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt.
- In another bowl, cream together the Crisco, white sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time. Mix in applesauce and vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped nuts.
- Pour batter into the prepared baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
